Similar to the Issue - Risk difference , another common difference which fails to elude many is that between a Case getting Resolved and a case getting Closed.
Normally , most business processes define 3 states. The first state being the Initiate State which has the status of the case as Active. The next state is the middle state , where the status changes to Resolved. And , finally in the 3rd state, the Status changes to Closed. The difference between the three states can be understood through the following Illustration :
1) Initiate State : A User Amy requests a change in a Document to another User Bob. Once Amy Requests a Change , the workflow is initiated and the status of the same becomes Active
2) Middle State : Bob , responds to Amy's Request and in the process , the status is Updated to Resolved. In other words, Bob, to the best of his capabilities, has solved the request sent by Amy.
3) Final State : Once Bob responds to Amy's request , the onus is back upon Amy to sign off the response. In other words, if she is satisfied with Bob's execution of his task , she Closes the workflow. If she is not satisfied, she may re-open the workflow, by changing the status back to Active -- Meaning more work for Bob :)
Also , an option can be to close the workflow automatically after a stipulated time if Amy fails to certify within that time.
Hope , it helps sum1 :)
